Originating from the Cotswold Hills of Gloucestershire, the Cotswold is an ancient longwool breed with a history dating back over 1,000 years. Sometimes referred to as the “Cotswold Lion” due to its bold appearance and flowing fleece, it is one of the most visually striking of all British sheep. The breed is large and graceful, with a characteristic forelock and a long, lustrous fleece that hangs in defined, wavy locks.
Its wool is recognised for its exceptional length, natural sheen, and strong structure, making it especially valuable for weaving, hand-spinning, and decorative textile work. The fibre holds dye beautifully and produces yarn with excellent drape and durability. Today, the Cotswold remains highly regarded by traditional textile producers and spinners seeking a classic British longwool with historical significance.
